With tickets already in hand for some of London’s most iconic attractions, our first day was set to be a whirlwind of sightseeing. From the top of a double-decker bus to the tranquil waters of the Thames, we knew we’d experience the city’s energy in the best way possible. Here’s how we spent our first unforgettable day in London:
10:00 AM – Arrive at Gatwick Airport
11:00 AM – Pick up tickets and board the Hop-On Hop-Off Open Top Bus Tour
11:45 AM – Thames River Cruise
1:00 PM – Lunch at The Hop Locker & Truffle Burger
2:00 PM – London Eye Ride
3:00 PM – Check into St. Athans Hotel
5:00 PM – Dinner and Drinks at Museum Tavern
After getting settled and picking up our tickets for the day’s adventures, we were eager to kick things off. Our first stop? The Golden Tours Hop-On Hop-Off Open Top Bus, which offered the perfect introduction to the city. With our 24-hour pass in hand, we were ready to take in London’s iconic sights and feel the pulse of this incredible city from a whole new perspective.
11:00 AM: Golden Tours London Hop-On Hop-Off Open Top Sightseeing Bus Tour
Our exploration began at Victoria Station, where we boarded the Golden Tours Hop-On Hop-Off Open Top Bus. The excitement was palpable as we made our way to the top deck, ready to experience London from above. The breeze in our hair and the sun warming our faces gave us an unmistakable sense of freedom—London was ours to explore. From here, the city sprawled before us, with sweeping views of iconic landmarks like Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, and the London Eye.
What made this tour so special was the flexibility it offered. With our 24-hour pass, we could hop off and on whenever we wanted, giving us the freedom to explore at our own pace. The bus ride was the perfect introduction to London—offering glimpses of the city’s grand history as we weaved through vibrant, ever-changing neighborhoods. From the top deck, we were able to see the exciting mix of old and new architecture that makes London so unique. It was the kind of experience that felt timeless yet personal, allowing us to dive right into the energy of the city.

Pick up Location: You can catch the Golden Tours buses at multiple locations around London, but we boarded near Victoria Station, which was super convenient.
Purchasing Tickets: We booked our tickets online through Viator. It was quick and easy, and we liked that it gave us the flexibility to change plans if needed.
Cost: The 24-hour pass cost around $58.50, which felt like a great value for how much we were able to see and do throughout the day.
Hours: The buses run frequently, giving you plenty of time to explore the city. Once you purchase your ticket, you can hop on any bus, and your 24-hour pass will start.
After the bus tour, we made our way to the Thames River cruise, which promised a completely different experience. As we walked along the river, we could already see some of the iconic landmarks awaiting us on the water. We were eager to continue our adventure and see London from a new perspective, cruising past historical landmarks and modern buildings alike.
11:45 AM: Thames River Cruise
After the bus tour, we made our way down to the Thames, ready for our next adventure. The boat for the Thames River cruise was waiting, and as we boarded, I felt a sense of excitement mixed with calm. There’s something special about seeing a city from the water—it feels like you’re truly stepping into its heart. The breeze in my hair and the sounds of the river felt like a welcome contrast to the buzzing streets we’d just left behind.
As the boat pulled away from the pier, I was struck by how the landmarks of London looked from the water. We passed the Elizabeth Tower (home to Big Ben, which, I learned, is actually the bell, not the tower itself), and sailed under famous bridges like the Millennium, London, and Tower Bridge. Our guide shared fascinating facts along the way, like how so many people mistakenly refer to Tower Bridge as London Bridge—when in fact, Tower Bridge is the one with the iconic twin towers. It was moments like this that made the tour feel not just like sightseeing, but like a mini history lesson, delivered in such an engaging way.
What surprised me most during the cruise was the contrast between the old and the new—how modern, glassy buildings stand side by side with centuries-old structures. It’s a perfect reflection of London itself: a city constantly evolving but still deeply rooted in its history. As the boat turned to head back, I felt a sense of peace, having seen this vibrant city from yet another angle. The experience felt like it had grounded me in London’s essence, and I could already tell it was going to be one of my favorite parts of the day.
The ride itself was blissful, with a refreshing breeze sweeping away the summer heat. The boat had a bar and bathrooms, adding to the comfort of the journey, though I did find myself wishing for a bit of shade on the top deck. If you’re visiting on a hot day, I highly recommend bringing sunscreen and staying hydrated so you can fully enjoy the cruise.

Location: Both the Thames River cruise and the London Eye are conveniently located at the London Eye Waterloo Pier. This makes it easy to enjoy both attractions without having to travel far between them.
Purchasing Tickets: We bought our combo tickets through TripAdvisor, which also offers reviews from other travelers. It was a simple process, and we received an email confirmation right away. You can also purchase tickets from the London Eye website, either separately or as a combination.
Cost: We paid $52.12 per ticket for the 40-minute cruise, which included the London Eye as part of the combo deal. It’s great value for two iconic experiences in one package!
Hours: There are multiple time slots available throughout the day for the Thames River cruise. We opted for the earliest available slot at 11:45 AM, hoping to avoid the afternoon rush. When booking, you’ll select a specific time for the cruise, but you can ride the London Eye at any time during the day.
After the relaxing boat ride, we were ready to refuel. The perfect place for that? A cozy spot at The Hop Locker & Truffle Burger along the South Bank. We couldn’t resist grabbing a cold beer and a delicious burger before continuing our exploration of London. It was just the kind of break we needed before heading to our next adventure.
1:00 PM: Beer from The Hop Locker and lunch from Truffle Burger
After the tranquil Thames River cruise, we had planned to head straight to the London Eye, but the line was long, and the hunger pangs were calling. Instead of rushing to the next attraction, we decided to take a leisurely stroll along The Queen’s Walk, enjoying the lively atmosphere and stunning riverside views. Under the Hungerford and Golden Jubilee Bridges, we found the perfect spot to relax and refuel: The Hop Locker and Truffle Burger.
As we approached The Hop Locker, I could already smell the delicious mix of hops and fresh air. The cozy space tucked under the bridge was inviting, with hanging lights creating a bright, welcoming atmosphere despite the more industrial surroundings. We each grabbed a refreshing pint of Lost + Grounded Brewers’ Keller Pils Lager, a crisp, satisfying beer that was exactly what we needed after a day of sightseeing. The bartenders were friendly and offered great recommendations since we weren’t familiar with the area, making the experience feel even more personal.
After finishing our beers, we headed over to Truffle Burger, a short walk away. The delicious aroma of freshly grilled burgers made it impossible to resist. I opted for the Veggie Truffle Burger, a hearty and flavorful choice, while my partner went with the classic Truffle Burger. We couldn’t resist adding an order of truffle fries with parmesan to share—comfort food at its finest. We took a seat, enjoying the lively vibe of the South Bank, watching the river pass by and taking in the energy around us. The perfect break in the middle of our sightseeing adventure.

Location: Southbank Centre Square, Belvedere Road, London. The Southbank Centre is not only home to the iconic Royal Festival Hall but also a cultural hub offering a variety of performances, exhibitions, and plenty of spots for food and drink. If you’re looking for an atmospheric place to take a break, it’s a great stop with beautiful views of the river and the London skyline.
Cost: Beers range from £3.25 for a half-pour to £6.50-£7.50 for a full pint, depending on the alcohol content. Most drinks fall between £6.00 and £9.00, making it a great option for a reasonably priced drink in the heart of London.
Location: 30 The Queen’s Walk, London SE1 8XX. Right under Hungerford Bridge, this spot offers an easy place to grab a delicious burger as you walk along the South Bank.
Cost: Burgers range from £10.50 to £11.85, with sides like truffle fries starting at £4.20, making it an affordable and tasty stop for a quick meal.
After our satisfying break, we were ready to continue our exploration. The next stop was a bucket-list experience—the London Eye. The excitement of seeing the city from above was palpable as we made our way to the pier, ready to experience a completely different perspective of London.
2:00 PM: London Eye
If you’re visiting London, the London Eye is a must-see attraction. Though it’s a popular tourist stop, it’s worth the experience for the incredible views alone. As we made our way to the London Eye, I couldn’t help but feel a bit of excitement. The thought of seeing the city from above made the whole adventure feel even more surreal.
Once aboard, the view was everything I hoped for and more. London stretched out beneath us, a sprawling mix of historic landmarks and modern architecture. Each capsule is air-conditioned, which felt like a relief on that warm summer day, making it not just breathtaking but also comfortable. We had the chance to spot iconic sights like the Houses of Parliament, the Shard, and the river winding through the heart of the city—everything looked different from up here.
While you can visit the London Eye on its own, I highly recommend purchasing the combo ticket, which also includes the Thames River cruise. The combination allows you to see London from both the water and the sky, offering unique perspectives of this incredible city. It’s the best way to make the most of your time.

Location: Both the London Eye and the Thames River cruise are conveniently located next to each other at the London Eye Waterloo Pier, making it easy to visit both attractions in one trip. The pier offers stunning views of the city along the river.
Purchasing Tickets: We booked our combo tickets through TripAdvisor, which made everything quick and easy. You can also buy tickets from the London Eye website, either separately or as a combo with other attractions.
Cost: We paid $52.12 for the combo ticket, which included the London Eye ride and a 40-minute Thames River cruise. It’s a great value when you want to see the best of London in one go.
Hours: The London Eye runs from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and until 8:30 PM on weekends. Since there’s no set time for your ride after your river cruise, you can enjoy the view at your own pace, just be mindful of the hours to catch the best possible experience.
After our ride, we were ready to continue our London adventure. But with so much more to explore, it was time to venture further into the city, heading to our next stop: St. Athans Hotel. The walk through the bustling streets was a perfect way to experience London’s unique energy before getting settled and recharging for the rest of the day.
3:00 PM: Check into St. Athans Hotel and Explore
After a busy day of sightseeing, it was time to check into our hotel. This was my first time staying at a hotel with more of a hostel vibe, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The rooms were smaller than I was used to, and there was only one shared bathroom per floor, which included both the toilet and shower. At first, I was a little unsure about the setup, but once I settled in, it turned out to be perfectly fine for the night. The hotel had a cozy charm, and the location couldn’t have been better—right in the heart of London with plenty of shops and restaurants just a short walk away. It was affordable compared to other hotels in the area, and the staff was friendly, even providing us with a fan since there was no air conditioning.
Overall, St. Athans Hotel offered a simple, convenient, and comfortable stay, and after a busy day of exploring, it felt great to have a peaceful place to rest. Plus, the central location made it easy to venture out for dinner later.

Hours: The hotel has a 24/7 front desk, so checking in at any time is convenient. Check-in is after 2 PM, and check-out is by 11 AM.
Nearby Attractions: St. Athans is ideally located for easy access to popular attractions. Russell Square is just a 5-minute walk, the British Library is 7 minutes away, and the British Museum is 12 minutes on foot. After settling in, we were ready for our next adventure: heading out for dinner and drinks at Museum Tavern. The day had been full of sightseeing, and we were eager to unwind and enjoy a relaxed evening in one of London’s cozy pubs.
5:00 PM: Dinner and drinks at the Museum Tavern
After checking into the hotel and settling in, we set out to explore the area. A short walk later, our stomachs began to remind us it was time for a meal. As we wandered around, we stumbled upon the Museum Tavern, a cozy little pub that turned out to be the perfect spot to unwind. The moment we walked in, the warm, inviting atmosphere made it feel like we had found a hidden gem. The pub had a fantastic selection of beers, mixed drinks, and a full food menu, and we quickly decided on trying the cask bitter, which was amazing, alongside a refreshing Pink Spritz—both priced at £9.00 each. For food, we opted for a delicious appetizer of shrimp and sausage on bread, followed by the Sirloin Steak for £18.45 and a side of seasoned fries for £3.25. Every bite was just what we needed to recharge after a day of sightseeing.
We ended up spending a couple of hours here, enjoying drinks and chatting with a friendly local who shared stories about London life. There was something so refreshing about sitting down and connecting with someone from the city, hearing their perspective on how things had changed over time. It gave me a deeper sense of what life in London really feels like—a mix of the familiar and the ever-evolving.

After a lovely, relaxed meal and some great conversation, we were ready to wrap up the day. It had been a full and exciting start to our time in London, but we knew we’d need a good night’s rest to recharge for the adventures ahead. So, we made our way back to St. Athans Hotel, where we could unwind and enjoy an early night, preparing for another full day of exploration tomorrow.

The warm ambiance and the friendly staff immediately made us feel at home. We ordered the classic Full English breakfast, which arrived with all the traditional components—bacon, eggs, sausage, beans, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, and toast, served with a pot of English tea. The Full English breakfast was £12.50, and the tea was an extra £6.00. It might seem like a simple meal, but it was one of my must-dos in London, and it did not disappoint. Every bite felt like a true London experience, comforting and hearty, exactly what we needed to fuel up for the day ahead.
We didn’t realize it at the time, but The Water Rats has a rich history. It’s not only known for its delicious food and drinks, but also for being a live music and theatre venue. Over the years, it’s hosted some legendary artists, including Bob Dylan’s first UK gig in 1962. Sitting there, enjoying my breakfast, I couldn’t help but think about the history that had unfolded in that very spot—how many people had passed through, shared stories, and experienced music in this cozy corner of London. It made the breakfast feel even more special, knowing that this unassuming café had been part of something so much bigger.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we headed out to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the cathedral, ready to take in another piece of London’s history.
12:00 PM: St. Paul’s Cathedral
Visiting St. Paul’s Cathedral is a must when in London, especially if you appreciate historic architecture. As I approached the cathedral, I was immediately in awe of its grandeur—towering spires, intricate details, and the sheer scale of it all. But stepping inside was a whole other experience. The ceilings seemed to reach up forever, the walls adorned with stunning artwork, and the light streaming through the windows created a serene and almost ethereal atmosphere. Walking through the nave and taking in the beautiful arches, mosaics, and carvings left me feeling truly humbled. It was like stepping into a living piece of history.
The £26.00 ticket was well worth it to see everything inside, and I’m so glad we spent the time exploring. Whether it’s the crypt, the galleries, or simply taking a moment to absorb the silence in the midst of such a grand space, visiting St. Paul’s is a memory I’ll carry with me. The air was fresh, and we were ready for some time outdoors to continue our exploration of London. The park was just the right place to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings, providing a perfect balance after the grandeur of the cathedral.
1:00 PM: Walk through St. James Park
After visiting St. Paul’s Cathedral, we decided to take a leisurely walk through St. James Park on our way to Buckingham Palace. The day had been full of iconic London sights, but the park offered a moment of peace and nature. On the way, we stumbled upon one of the most famous telephone booths in London, and of course, we had to stop for a photo—it’s practically a rite of passage! We also had a fun surprise when we saw police officers on horseback trotting by, adding a bit of London charm to our stroll.
When we finally arrived at St. James Park, it was even more beautiful than I had imagined. The park was teeming with life—swans and ducks were lounging lazily in the ponds, while artists set up easels, capturing the picturesque views. People were relaxing under the trees, reading books, or simply soaking in the sun. It was the perfect blend of tranquility and activity, a place where you could escape the hustle and bustle of the city and connect with nature. 2:00 PM: Buckingham Palace
After our relaxing walk through St. James Park, we made our way to Buckingham Palace. While we hadn’t planned ahead for a tour inside, we were still excited to see the iconic palace up close. The gardens were in full bloom, the sun was shining, and there was something magical about standing in front of the gates, taking in the beauty of the palace. Of course, we were eager to see the famous guards in their red uniforms and tall hats—just like in the movies. It felt like one of those quintessential London experiences that you can’t help but enjoy, even if you’re just admiring the palace from the outside.
There were plenty of people around, snapping photos and taking in the sights, but the crowds cleared out quickly, leaving us with a bit of space to enjoy the view. 3:00 PM: Lunch at The Phoenix
After a full day of exploring, we were ready to stop for some lunch and recharge. While wandering around, we stumbled upon The Phoenix, a charming spot with a rooftop bar that seemed perfect for a sunny afternoon. However, due to the heatwave sweeping through London, the rooftop was a bit too warm for comfort, so we opted to move to the upstairs bar. To our surprise, we had the entire space to ourselves for a while, which made for a relaxing and intimate atmosphere. The bartender was friendly and welcoming, and the vibe was bright and upscale—just what we needed to unwind.
We ordered a refreshing beer and an Aperol spritz (£19 for both), and enjoyed a delicious lunch. The Young’s fish & chips were crispy and flavorful, and the special raw salmon dish (£29) was light and fresh, making for a perfect combination. While it was one of the pricier spots we visited in London, the experience and quality of the food made it worth it. I couldn’t wait to see what Paris had in store.

How much time do you need in London?
For a first-time visit, I’d recommend a 3 to 4-day trip to see the highlights of London. In the 20ish hours we spent in the city, we managed to hit many of the major attractions, but there were still a few spots we would have loved to visit if we had more time. The key to making the most of a short trip is focusing on the landmarks and experiences that matter most to you. With a bit of planning and a flexible attitude, you can absolutely experience the best of London in just a few days.

The best time to visit really depends on your preferences. For pleasant weather and fewer crowds, spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are ideal. We visited at the start of September, and it was perfect. The summer tourist crowds had begun to thin out, and we were lucky enough to catch a heatwave, with temperatures hitting the high 80s to low 90s. It made for a lovely experience—nice weather without the hustle and bustle of peak tourist season, which allowed us to enjoy.
What is the Best Way to get Around London?
Getting around London is surprisingly easy and convenient, thanks to the city’s efficient public transportation system. The iconic London Underground, or “Tube,” is definitely the fastest way to travel between neighborhoods, with stations scattered all over the city. It’s simple, quick, and gets you where you need to go in no time. If you’re looking for a scenic way to get around, buses are a great option. Not only are they a bit slower, but you’ll also get to enjoy views of London’s famous landmarks as you travel through different parts of the city.
For a more relaxed pace, you could hop on a river bus along the Thames—it’s a wonderful way to see the city from a different perspective. And, of course, there’s always the classic black cab if you’re in the mood for a more traditional London experience. If you’re feeling adventurous, cycling or walking are also fantastic ways to explore the city at your own pace, allowing you to really soak in the sights and sounds around you.
With contactless payment cards and helpful apps like Google Maps, navigating the city is simple, making it easy to jump from one adventure to the next without any stress.
