After locating the Golden Tours pick-up spot near Victoria Station, we boarded the iconic double-decker bus to kick off our day of exploring London. Our 24-hour ticket gave us the flexibility to hop on and off the bus whenever we needed, making it easy to get around the city. We rode from Victoria Station all the way to the bus stop at the end of Westminster Bridge Rd, right across from the Queen’s Walk, leading to the London Eye. From the top of the bus, we were able to enjoy stunning views of London’s historic buildings, churches, and charming streets, making it the perfect way to see the city from a new perspective!

Golden Tours London Hop-On Hop-Off Open Top Sightseeing Bus Tour
Pick up Location: You can get onto any of the Golden Tour buses at any of their multiple pick up locations. We got on at the pick up spot near Victoria Station. When you board one of the Golden Tours double-decker buses, you’ll receive a map showing all the bus stop locations, so you’ll know exactly where you can hop on and off throughout the city. This makes it easy to plan your journey and explore different parts of London. For added convenience, you can also download the CityMapper app, which provides real-time information on all transportation options, including bus routes, trains, and even walking directions.
Purchasing Tickets: We purchased our tickets through Viator, a popular platform for booking tours and activities. It’s a simple process – just visit their website, search for the experience you’re interested in, and select the date and time that works best for you. Viator often offers flexible cancellation options, so it’s a convenient way to secure tickets ahead of time. Once you’ve booked, you’ll receive a confirmation, and you’re all set to enjoy your experience.
Cost: We paid $58.50 for the 24-hour Golden Tours double-decker bus ticket, which gave us unlimited access to the bus for a full day of sightseeing. However, it’s important to check pricing ahead of time, as it can change. Be sure to visit the official website for the most up-to-date information and to confirm ticket costs before you purchase, so you’re fully prepared for your adventure.
Hours: One of the best features of the Golden Tours double-decker bus is its flexibility. There are no set boarding hours—once you purchase your ticket online, you can hop on any bus at any station, and your 24-hour pass will start. This makes it easy to explore London at your own pace, hopping on and off to visit various attractions throughout the day. It’s a more affordable option than taking an Uber or taxi, but if you have the chance, don’t miss the classic London taxi experience – we did it once, and it’s definitely worth it.
11:45am: Thames River Cruise
The Thames River cruise, hosted by The lastminute.com London Eye, exceeded all our expectations. The boat arrived right on time, and the cruise lasted as long as promised. As we sailed down the river, we passed iconic sights like the Elizabeth Tower (home to Big Ben, which is actually the name of the bell, not the tower itself). We turned around and cruised down the other side, passing under famous bridges like the Millennium, London, and Tower Bridge. Our tour guide, though I can’t recall her name, was fantastic and shared fascinating facts about the landmarks, including how many people mistakenly call Tower Bridge “London Bridge”—when in fact, Tower Bridge is the more famous of the two.
As we cruised further down the Thames, we were able to see more iconic sights. I was surprised to see such a mix of old and new buildings along the river, with many modern structures that I hadn’t expected in London. It was fascinating to see how the city blends its historic architecture with contemporary designs. After passing the Tower Bridge, we turned around and made our way back to the pier. On the return journey, we had a better chance to appreciate sights we had missed earlier, especially since the tour guide focused on one side of the river on the way down and the other side on the way back. It was a great way to see the city from a different perspective.
The boat ride itself was incredible, with a refreshing breeze on the warm summer day. The boat had convenient amenities like bathrooms and a bar, making the experience even more enjoyable. However, there was no shade on the top deck, so when the sun was directly overhead, it could get quite hot. If you’re sensitive to the sun, I highly recommend bringing sunscreen and plenty of water to stay comfortable throughout the ride.

Location: Both the Thames River cruise and the London Eye are conveniently located right next to each other at the London Eye Waterloo Pier, making it easy to enjoy both attractions in one trip. The address is London 1SW1A 1AE, UK, and it’s a prime spot for sightseeing, with stunning views of the river and nearby landmarks. This close proximity allows for a smooth and efficient day of exploring without having to travel far between activities.
Purchasing Tickets: We purchased our combo tickets through TripAdvisor, a trusted platform for booking tours, activities, and attractions. Simply visit their website, search for the experience you’re interested in, and choose the date and time that works for you. TripAdvisor also provides reviews from other travelers, so you can get a better idea of what to expect. After booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email, and you’ll be all set for your adventure. You can also buy tickets from the London Eye website – tickets are available separately or as a combination.
Cost: We paid $52.12 per ticket for a 40-minute river cruise along the Thames River, which also included a ride on the London Eye, all booked through TripAdvisor. This combination ticket offered great value, allowing us to enjoy two iconic London experiences in one package. It’s always a good idea to check TripAdvisor for deals like these, as they often offer convenient bundles that help you make the most of your time.
Hours: On the TripAdvisor site, there were multiple time slots available throughout the day for the Thames River cruise. We opted for the earliest time possible – 11:45am – right after we arrived, hoping to beat the afternoon crowds. When booking, you’ll need to select a specific time for the river cruise, but there’s no set time for riding the London Eye, so you can do that at your convenience during the day. This flexibility made it easier to plan our day around other activities in London.
1:00pm: Beer from The Hop Locker and lunch from Truffle Burger
After our Thames River cruise, we were planning to head straight to the London Eye, but the line was long, and we were feeling hungry. So, we decided to stroll down The Queen’s Walk to find a bite to eat. Along the river, there were plenty of food and drink options, especially under the Hungerford and Golden Jubilee Bridges. We ended up grabbing refreshing beers from The Hop Locker and delicious burgers from Truffle Burger, making for the perfect break before continuing our day of sightseeing.
The Hop Locker had an impressive selection of both draft beers and cans, as well as mixed drinks. We each ordered a pint of Lost + Grounded Brewers’ Keller Pils Lager for £6.50, totaling £13.00. The bartenders were incredibly friendly and offered helpful suggestions since we weren’t familiar with the area. I also loved the atmosphere – the decor and hanging lights gave the space a light and bright vibe, even though we were tucked under a bridge.
After grabbing our beers, we headed over to Truffle Burger to grab some food. I chose the Veggie Truffle Burger for £11.50, while my partner went with The Truffle Burger for £10.85, bringing our total to £22.35. We also added an order of truffle fries with parmesan for £4.20. We sat down to enjoy our delicious burgers, sipped our beers, and took in the lively area around us for about half an hour before heading back to ride the London Eye. It was a perfect, relaxed break in the middle of our day.

2:00pm: London Eye
If you’re visiting London and have some time to spare, I highly recommend taking a ride on the London Eye. While it’s a popular tourist attraction, it’s definitely worth it for the experience. Not only do you get stunning views of the city, but each capsule is air-conditioned, making it a comfortable escape, especially on hot summer days.
While there are ticket options that only include the London Eye without the Thames River cruise, I highly recommend going for the combo ticket. Both attractions are definitely worth experiencing. The London Eye offers amazing views of the city, while the Thames River cruise gives you a unique perspective from the water. It’s the perfect way to make the most of your time in London.

Be sure to plan your visit so you have enough time to enjoy the stunning views before closing time.
3:00pm: Check into St. Athans Hotel and explore
This was my first time staying at a hotel with more of a hostel vibe. The rooms were smaller, and there was just one shared bathroom per floor, which included both the toilet and shower. Initially, I wasn’t sure about this setup, but after settling in, it turned out to be a perfectly fine place for the night. The hotel was in a great location, close to shops and restaurants, and reasonably priced compared to others in the area. The staff was friendly and even provided us with a fan since there was no air conditioning. Overall, it was a comfortable and convenient stay.

5:00pm: Dinner and drinks at the Museum Tavern
After checking into the hotel and getting settled, we ventured out to explore the area. As we walked around, we got hungry and stumbled upon the Museum Tavern, which turned out to be a great find. This cozy, small pub had a fantastic selection of beers, mixed drinks, and a full food menu. We tried the cask bitter, which was amazing, along with a Pink Spritz, both priced at £9.00 each. For food, we enjoyed a delicious appetizer of shrimp and sausage on bread, the Sirloin Steak for £18.45, and a side of seasoned fries for £3.25 that were equally fantastic. It was a lovely spot to relax and enjoy great food and drinks.
We ended up spending a couple hours here, enjoying drinks and chatting with a friendly older gentleman from the area. It was a refreshing experience to sit down with a local and exchange stories about our daily lives and how things have changed over time. It gave us a deeper understanding of life in London, and it felt great to connect with someone from the city in such a relaxed and welcoming setting.

After visiting St. Paul’s Cathedral, we decided to head to St. James Park and Buckingham Palace. On our way, we stumbled upon one of the most famous telephone booths in London and, of course, had to snap a photo. We also got a fun surprise when we saw police officers on horseback!
When we arrived at St. James Park, it was just as beautiful as we had imagined. Swans and ducks were lounging in the ponds, artists were capturing the stunning surroundings, and people were relaxing under the trees, reading or enjoying the sunshine. It was a peaceful yet lively place, filled with the excitement of everyone enjoying the day. If you’re looking for a more laid-back activity to connect with nature, a walk through the park is the perfect way to unwind.

The palace gardens were in full bloom, the sun was shining, and we even got to see the iconic guards from the movies, all while admiring the palace up close. 3:00pm: Lunch at The Phoenix
After exploring, we got hungry and stumbled upon a place with a rooftop bar, and we couldn’t resist checking it out. The enclosed rooftop was too hot due to the city’s heatwave, so we moved to the upstairs bar where we had the entire space to ourselves for a while. The bartender was friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere felt bright and upscale. We ordered a beer and an Aperol spritz for £19 and enjoyed a delicious lunch, including Young’s fish & chips and a special raw salmon dish for £29. Best time to visit London
The best time to visit London really depends on what you’re looking for, but generally, spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are considered ideal. We visited at the beginning of September, and it was a great experience. The crowds had thinned out as the tourist season was winding down, and we were lucky enough to catch a heat wave, with temperatures reaching the high 80s to low 90s. It was the perfect balance of nice weather and fewer tourists, making it an enjoyable time to explore the city.
